LOW
Under 3.9 mmol/L (70 mg/dL)
Hypoglycemia
Symptoms: Shaky, sweaty, dizzy, pale, irritable, hungry.
The "Rule of 15" Protocol:
- Give 15 grams of fast-acting carbs (e.g., 4oz juice, 3-4 glucose tabs, 1tbsp honey).
- Wait exactly 15 minutes.
- Check blood sugar again.
- If still under 70, repeat steps 1-3.
- Once stabilized, give a small snack containing protein/fat (like cheese and crackers) to hold the number steady.
SEVERE LOW: If child is unconscious or seizing, do NOT give food/drink. Administer Glucagon/Baqsimi immediately and call 911.
HIGH
Over 13.9 mmol/L (250 mg/d)
Hyperglycemia
Symptoms: Extreme thirst, frequent urination, headache, blurry vision, fatigue.
High Sugar Protocol:
- Calculate and give a Correction Dose of fast-acting insulin based on your doctor's formula.
- Give plenty of water to flush out excess sugar.
- CHECK FOR KETONES using a urine strip or blood ketone meter.
- If ketones are moderate/large, avoid exercise and contact your diabetes care team immediately.
SEVERE HIGH: If possible see if the child can move around, slight activity to reduce the levels in conjuction with insulin.
