Numbers, numbers and more numbers
This is something that will natuarally occur. You will experience overwhelming urge and need to track your kid's CGM glucose level numbers. It does get easier and you shpukd never not pay attention but you will get acustom to it and find a fine balance in time. Some of the helpul advice things mentioed earlier here will make that a reality.
Will my child be able to play sports and eat sweets?
Absolutely. With modern technology like CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitors) and insulin pumps, children with T1D can do everything other children do. They can play competitive sports, eat cake at birthday parties, and live fully. You just have to plan for it by adjusting insulin and monitoring their numbers.
What is a CGM and a Pump?
- CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor): A wearable sensor (like a Dexcom or Libre) that checks sugar levels every few minutes and sends the data to your phone, removing the need for constant finger pricks.
- Insulin Pump: A small device worn on the body that delivers insulin continuously through a small tube/cannula, replacing multiple daily shots.
Aditional CGM Devices
- There are a few option on the market to have display clocks, screens and lights for seeing the active levels.
- These are cloud based data displays so they lag 5 minutes or more, but great for at a glance for parents.
- SugarPixel: A dedicated pixel-style LED clock showing big bold numbers, color-coded ranges, delta changes, and a bed vibration puck for heavy sleepers.
- Gluview Glucose Clock Projector: A bedside unit that projects real-time blood glucose data and time quietly onto your wall or ceiling in a sleep-friendly red glow.
- Sugar Dash: A 7-inch Wi-Fi touchscreen display that tracks multiple users with color-coded range tracking, though it operates without built-in audio alerts.
- Ulanzi Smart Pixel Clock: My favourite and most affordable is flashing the Ulanzi Smart Pixel Clock (TC001) and adding Dexcom G7 login to it or Nightscout.
- With Dexcom data sources are pulled from services like Dexcom Share or directly by using the primary user login from Dexcom.
- Nightscout is more involved CGM monitoring, that will be covered later or see some online resources by other users.
Adhesive Patches
- Yes, patches to keep the devices on your active kids.
- Also these additional adhesive patches can be very decorative and allow for a more customization and individuality.
- G7 Sensor - Comes with initial adhesive and additional circle patch adhesive to make it double secure on the kid’s body.
- G7 Sensor - But adding some additional patches on G7 sensor allows for more flexibility and adhesion when being active, sleeping, swimming just living active life.
- Omnipod 5 - Your tubeless pump comes with its on device adhesize, but that’s all it comes with.
- We found that that might work for certain body spots, but as soon as the kid is active or if this pump is in a more bendable body spot, canola can be move or even pulled out due to movement.
- Omnipod 5 - there are circular pches that Omnipod sells in addition, but there are a lot of other options for a more secure fit, through Amazon and other online sources.
- Omnipod 5 - what we found that active kids and swimming requires not just an extra patch but also maybe a cover like body tape to keep it securely on the body.
- Rule of thumb: GOOD-Original device adhesive / BETTER-Extra cover patch. / BEST-Extra cover patch.
