What is T1D?
T1D is an autoimmune condition. The body's immune system mistakenly attacks the beta cells in the pancreas, stopping it from producing insulin. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle.
The Role of Insulin
Insulin is a key that unlocks cells, allowing glucose (sugar) from food to enter and provide energy. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood, causing high blood sugar.
Carbohydrates
Carbs raise blood sugar. A large part of T1D management is counting the grams of carbohydrates in your child's food and giving the right amount of insulin to cover it.
